Wolfram, creator of Mathematica, Wolfram|Alpha and Wolfram Language, is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Quality Improvement Developer to maintain, debug and improve our existing software. This role involves working on complicated, often mathematically driven legacy code, identifying root causes of bugs and implementing robust fixes that will stand up to QA testing and not introduce regressions. The ideal candidate thrives in deep code analysis, has familiarity with numerical or symbolic computation methods and understands the importance of methodical work in handling the complexities of mathematical and related software.
Responsibilities
- Investigating, reproducing and resolving bugs in legacy mathematical computation software
- Collaborating with QA, developers and domain experts to validate fixes and ensure software correctness
- Maintaining detailed documentation of discovered bugs, root causes and resolutions
- Implementing fixes that maintain numerical reliability and speed/memory performance
- Writing regression tests to ensure long-term stability of critical computation paths
- Participating in technical discussions related to legacy architecture and modernization efforts
Qualifications
- Proficiency in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Programming experience in Wolfram Language
- Understanding of numerical methods and/or symbolic computation and/or other forms of mathematical computation, e.g. familiarity with computational aspects of special functions or discrete calculus
- Ability to read and interpret code without documentation
- Strong background in pure or applied mathematics, physics, engineering or computer science
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Preferred qualifications
- Experience debugging and maintaining legacy software systems
- Programming skills in languages commonly used in scientific computing (e.g. Fortran, C/C++, Python)
- Familiarity with mathematical libraries (e.g., LAPACK, BLAS, MUMPS, COIN-OR/Couenne, TetGen or others)
- Exposure to symbolic computation or computer algebra systems
- Experience with build systems and cross-platform compilation (e.g. CMake, Make)
- Experience using version control systems (e.g. Git, CVS, SVN)
